According to people familiar with the project, the system was intended to coordinate verified blueprint files for the safe assembly of basic organic compounds at the molecular level.
Last year, reports circulated online that OpenMatter researchers had produced a salt crystal from mineral feedstock — an early proof of controlled assembly inside a sealed chamber.
Funding has now been cut. The founders are preparing to sell the technology to Dynamics Group, a private commercial corporation. Employees say they were hired to build an open, nonprofit infrastructure layer, not to transfer the future of production into a closed monopoly.
We were hired in OpenMatter to solve an engineering problem: make molecular assembly safe, scalable, and governable.
We built an operating system for replicators capable of creating objects from verified blueprint files: medicines, medical implants, components for critical infrastructure, and, eventually, a practical path toward reducing scarcity.
The hard question was not only how to train AI to coordinate billions of nanoassemblers. The hard question was who decides which blueprints are safe, which must be blocked, and who gets priority when energy is not available for every request.
A replicator does not break physics. It does not make things from nothing. It requires feedstock, energy, cooling, audited blueprints, and responsible governance.
That is why we built an open system. It was supposed to include technical protocols, access rules, energy allocation, priority logic, and controls against dangerous blueprint files.
Now this work is being transferred to one corporation. OpenMatter’s founders call it “quarantine for a new technology.” We call it a private monopoly over the infrastructure of the future.
We demand an independent public audit, a published blueprint-governance framework, an independent safety council, and the release of the operating system code under open governance.
The future of matter-building must be developed under transparent rules, independent audit, and protection from monopolization.
Additional note: inside OpenMatter, every employee was required to wear AI glasses with continuous video recording. Officially, this was described as “safety audit and AI training.”
After OpenMatter leadership refused to negotiate, employees preserved part of the recordings made through those devices. Selected footage will be released soon to show what was created in the lab and why this technology should not disappear behind the closed doors of a single company.
